the mortification of a poem

i.

Poetry has always been a form of writing
just out of your reach.
There’s a certain flow to the words,
a movement of the soul
that you lack.

The pen leaks your pain
like the lancing of a wound,
but you always wonder
if your words touch anyone else
or if this is a performance for an audience of one.

ii.

You don’t write for the fame of it all.
We shy from the agony of being known,
but surely someone will read these words
and think:

She gets it.

Someone in the world hurts in the same way I do.
